Root Canal Treatment (RCT) & Re-RCT

Saving Teeth, Restoring Smiles

7 min readRH Dental Care
Summary

Root canal treatment removes infected pulp from inside the tooth, cleans the canals, and seals them — saving teeth that would otherwise need extraction. Re-RCT addresses previously treated teeth that become re-infected.

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) and Re-Root Canal Treatment (Re-RCT) are procedures designed to save teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted. RCT is used to treat infection or inflammation in the pulp — the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels.

Why is RCT Needed?

  • Deep decay or cavities.
  • Cracked or fractured teeth.
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth.
  • Trauma to the tooth.

Signs You May Need RCT

  • Severe toothache or sensitivity to hot and cold.
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums.
  • Discoloration of the tooth.
  • Persistent bad breath or taste.

The Root Canal Treatment Process

  1. 1Diagnosis and Preparation: The dentist examines the tooth and uses X-rays to assess the extent of damage. Local anesthesia is administered.
  2. 2Pulp Removal: An opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected pulp is removed.
  3. 3Cleaning and Shaping: The root canals are cleaned and shaped to remove bacteria and debris.
  4. 4Filling and Sealing: The cleaned canals are filled with gutta-percha and sealed.
  5. 5Restoration: In most cases, a crown is placed on the tooth to restore its strength and functionality.

What is Re-RCT?

Re-Root Canal Treatment is performed when a previously treated tooth becomes reinfected or fails to heal properly. This procedure involves removing the old filling material, cleaning the canals again, and resealing them.

Benefits of RCT and Re-RCT

  • Preserves Natural Teeth: Avoids the need for extraction.
  • Restores Functionality: Allows normal chewing and biting.
  • Improves Oral Health: Eliminates infection and prevents its spread.
  • Aesthetic Restoration: Keeps your smile intact with a natural appearance.

Root Canal Treatment and Re-Root Canal Treatment are invaluable procedures in modern dentistry. If you're experiencing tooth pain, consult your dentist promptly. Timely intervention can save your tooth and relieve pain.
