Dental Fillings & Restoration

Treating Cavities and Restoring Damaged Tooth Structure

4 min readRH Dental Care
Summary

Dental fillings restore teeth damaged by cavities or minor fractures. Modern composite resin fillings are tooth-colored, durable, and bond directly to the tooth for a natural result.

Dental fillings are one of the most common dental treatments used to restore the function and integrity of teeth damaged by decay, fracture, or wear. Modern filling materials like composite resin provide excellent aesthetics and durability.

Types of Dental Fillings

  1. 1Composite Resin: Tooth-colored and aesthetically pleasing. Bonds directly to the tooth surface.
  2. 2Glass Ionomer: Releases fluoride and bonds to the tooth. Good for areas not under heavy pressure.
  3. 3Amalgam: Silver-colored, extremely durable — more commonly used in the past.
  4. 4Ceramic/Porcelain: Highly aesthetic, custom-crafted in a lab.

When Are Fillings Needed?

  • Cavities caused by tooth decay.
  • Chipped or cracked teeth.
  • Worn-down teeth from grinding.
  • Replacement of old, failing fillings.

The Filling Procedure

  1. 1Numbing the area with local anesthesia.
  2. 2Removing the decayed or damaged tissue.
  3. 3Cleaning the cavity thoroughly.
  4. 4Placing the filling material in layers, curing each layer with a special light.
  5. 5Shaping and polishing for a natural bite and feel.

The best filling is no filling — maintain excellent oral hygiene and visit your dentist every six months to prevent cavities before they require treatment.
