Pulpectomy / Pulpotomy

Preserving the Health of Young and Damaged Teeth

Summary

Pulpectomy and pulpotomy are root canal-equivalent procedures for children's teeth — removing infected pulp to save the tooth while maintaining the space needed for permanent teeth.

When decay or infection affects the inner pulp of a baby tooth, treatments like pulpectomy or pulpotomy may be necessary to save the tooth and maintain its function.

What is Pulpectomy?

A Pulpectomy is a dental procedure performed to remove the entire pulp tissue (from the crown and the root canals) when the pulp is irreversibly infected or necrotic. It is similar to a root canal in adults but is adapted for children.

What is Pulpotomy?

A Pulpotomy involves removing only the diseased or inflamed portion of the pulp tissue from the crown, leaving the healthy pulp in the root canals intact. This is typically performed on primary teeth with mild to moderate pulpitis.

Pulpectomy Steps

  1. 1Local anesthesia to numb the area.
  2. 2Removal of the infected pulp tissue.
  3. 3Cleaning and disinfecting the root canals.
  4. 4Filling the canals with a resorbable material suitable for baby teeth.
  5. 5Sealing the tooth with a crown or restoration.

Pulpotomy Steps

  1. 1Local anesthesia for comfort.
  2. 2Removal of the infected crown pulp only.
  3. 3Application of a medicament (e.g., formocresol or mineral trioxide aggregate MTA) to preserve the remaining pulp.
  4. 4Sealing the tooth with a filling or crown.
